DIY Snake Removal and Control Tips

Lucky for you and your outdoor pets, snakes found in the lawn are usually not dangerous. Most poisonous Indiana snakes are in the very south part of the state and primarily reside by large bodies of water like rivers and lakes. But even though the standard lawn snakes do not pose a safety concern, they can still be detrimental in other ways. If you are experiencing frequent lawn snakes, whether they have yet caused a problem or not, it is important to put an end to the matter as soon as possible. Acting fast will save you time,  frustration, and money.

Continue reading to learn more about lawn snakes, and how to safely and humanely get rid of them.

Locate their Nest

In order to sufficiently get rid of snakes, you will need to stop them at their source. Do this by finding their nest first. If you don’t locate the nest, you have a small chance at eliminating your snake problem. Start by looking in small corners and crevices of your property. Also take a look under compost piles, wood piles, hollowed trees, as well as, under big rocks or rain gutters.

If you find nothing, you may have to consider leveling the ground to locate a snake nest. When you do locate the nest, it is best to simply destroy it. Don’t worry, snakes are perfectly fine without their nests for a few days, and once they find a new habitat, it doesn’t take much time or effort to rebuild. By destroying the nest, you are preventing snakes from residing near your property.

Eliminate Trash

If you want snakes to stop coming around, you need to think about what’s attracting them. In most cases, it’s food and shelter. And what better way to provide both of these amenities than to let trash and garbage accumulate on your property. Whether you just had a family barbecue, or live near a busy street, when your lawn has trash in it, you bet there will be wildlife around. Keep trash and garbage contained, and do not take your garbage cans outside until the morning of pickup. This also applies to natural debris, like fallen twigs and branches, or piles of leaves.

Keep the Grass Cut

Tall grass is a perfect means for hiding and hunting for a snake. By keeping the grass cut, snakes are more exposed and vulnerable. Low grass and minimal underbrush is an effective method for keeping snakes away. As long as the grass is growing, continue to mow it on a regular basis.

Get Rid of Compost Piles

Compost heaps are another attractive spot for snakes to nest. It provides a cool, shady retreat that keeps them hidden and safe. If you must have compost piles, be sure they are as far away from your house as possible to prevent snake intrusion. This includes other piles that provide a cool place to hide, including bricks, rocks, gravel, and wood.

Install Snake-Proof Fencing

Installing snake-proof fencing, especially around gardens, is an effective method for snake prevention. They stand between 2 to 4 feet tall, and constructed of mesh wire. You can purchase this type of fencing at any home improvement or garden store at an affordable price. And they are easy to install.
